Zenit is a team on the rise. Once a mediocre Russian club, they are on of the top teams in last seasons. They finished last championship just a point adrift from first place, and this season the are the leaders, with nice chances for the title. They have several Czech players (the coach is also a Czech) and some good Russian man, so they are a team to respect.
Crvena Zvezda (Red Star, if you prefer), was a European champion, but it was 13 years ago. In last decade, after each season they sell best players and no wonder they recently don't have any international success. The team is young, too young to cope in serious European competition. In front of trip to Sankt Petersburg they have a couple of ill players (solid striker Pantelic), who are doubtful.
Trying to compare teams who never played each other is not an easy task. Howewer, imo, there are important signs which lead to home victory here. First, logically, it's a home game for Zenit. Red Star will play for a draw, Russian will play to win. Even a narrow defeat could be a good result for Red Star (I see them defending on 1-0 or 2-1 for Zenit). Second, teams from Serbia and Montenegro (or former Yugoslavia) never liked to play against "Russian school". Russian teams play organized football, short passes, keeping the ball, pressuring the midfield. Our teams prefer when opponent plays long ball - like English or Scandinavians play - and Zenit is not such a team.
Red Star's main strenght are home games, on big stadium full of noisy supporters. On away games it is a diferent team, especially those young guys, who, for example, got demolished in Eindhoven not long ago.
